Mini Mini Rant... Okay... Not so mini

Journal Entry: Fri Jan 20, 2012, 9:44 PM

So I had this strange thought last night. What was this strange thought? I was thinking about weeaboo's and how much I can't stand them. Then that thought shifted how far do you have to go on the other end of the spectrum to not be considered a weeaboo? The general definition of one is that you're completely obsessed with anime, manga, Japan and anything Japanese related. It's like you physically want to change your ethnicity and you believe that Japan is like the ultimate God Country or some weird shit. Some other definitions, though, have indicated that if you want to learn the language, and are into yaoi/yuri/het, and take serious interest in the Japanese culture, it makes you a weeaboo. I completely disagree with the last of the statements. Why, might you ask? Well here it is.

I seriously love Japan. I think it is a beautiful country and that there many interesting things about it and, yes, I would love to live there, but in the end, it's just another country. There are as many other interesting things in Austria, Spain, France, Italy, Russia, Greece, Egypt, Kenya, Syria, Iran, Iraq, and any other country, as there are in Japan. In the end I am not simply in love with Japans culture. I am fascinated by almost every culture in the world and wish I could learn a little about every one of them and their peoples customs. It almost makes me ill to think of all the people who only care about one countries culture and, in all truth, a notable trait of weeaboo's, which let me remind you are mainly AMERICANS, want to throw away the culture they were born into. I would never want to do that. I don't like all the ways I, as an American, live but I would never, ever, want to throw it away like it never existed. That would be pointless.

Point number two. I am not (completely) ashamed to admit that I am a yaoi, and yuri, fan. There are times where I do completely obsess over it but I can also truthfully say that it is not my every waking thought. I don't believe that all gay couples are like that and I can tell the difference between television and reality. I shamelessly slash characters together but so do people who have never even HEARD the word anime, or manga, or yaoi/yuri. Seriously. Watching gay, animated, Japanese, porn does make me a weeaboo. It just makes me a slightly weirder American teenage girl who has too much time on her hands. I won't stop watching it until I grow out of this phase, if I ever do. Let me also just say that it's not just Japanese animation I like watching. I love other countries soaps that have gay story lines. I watch them just to see boys make out on screen. That does NOT make me a fucking weeaboo.

Point number three. Can't a person want to learn a language just because they think it sounds cool and may want to speak it to better learn about a country? Apparently not if it's Japanese you want to learn and you watch anime and read manga. If you tell people that they're automatically like, "Well there's another fucking weeaboo. What's with these people?" I hate that! I love learning languages and have always been fascinated by Asian languages, mostly because of how difficult they are. I also want to learn Korean, Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), and Vietnamese. Those languages really don't have a whole hell of a lot to do with my interest in anime and manga. They're just... Interesting.  I can understand calling someone who randomly puts in Japanese words without knowing their real meaning a weeaboo but not someone who is clearly trying to learn something.

Also, on a completely unrelated note. I am a person who plays sports, participates in activities that include music, and do many other things that do not involve the Japanese. Music brings up another smaller point. Just because I like music from Asian countries, does NOT mean I hate English music. There are many bands I like that sing in English, and English only. They may not come from my home country, but that's fine. I'm just supporting other countries musical artists. Seriously folks, chill. It won't kill you to listen to something other than your rappers rapping about sex, money, bitches, and more sex. CHILL. Anyway. I support all music and am not a hater. I wish more people would look at it like that. They shouldn't limit themselves so much.

I could probably go on ranting for another couple of paragraphs but I'm so tired that I'm getting sick of having to hit backspace because of all my typo's. If you have read this entire journal, I 'd love to read your thoughts so please post them. If not, you suck and you won't see this statement. Thanks for reading.

I am NOT a weeaboo.

I do NOT want to be Japanese.

I am LEARNING to speak the language.

I LOVE their CULTURE, and their ART.

I play SPORTS.

I do NOT listen to vocaloids.

I do NOT do cosplay.

My life is not dictated by my love of manga, anime, and animated porn.

I refuse to be called a weeaboo, so how far to the left must I go, if a weeaboo is all the way to the right, to not be considered one of them?
